Hi all!

We have decided to replace our vinyl flooring with wood laminate. This is the first time that we will try to do this, so we are novices. Ok, the kitchen is our biggest problem as there are 3 layers of vinyl tiles. I'm quite certain that the top layer does not contain asbestos (can't be more than 10 yrs. old). I'm assuming that the other two layers contain asbestos, as our house was built in the early 70's. The foyer & family room have one layer of vinyl and there is cement under it (there is also cement/concrete in the kitchen).

We would be doing the work ourselves and I'm concerned about the danger of asbestos. I have looked at the floor in the kitchen and there is enough allowance that it wouldn't look odd if we laid the new floor on top.

My questions are:

1. Would it be ok to place the wood laminate over the 3 layers of existing floor?

2. Could the build up of vinyl layers affect the wood laminate in some way?

3. Would it be safe to remove the upper layer of vinyl in the kitchen without disturbing the other layers?

Thanks for your help!
