House is about 25 yrs old. Backsplash is original tile that I've painted with "Colours in Plastic" (5 years ago). I want to do new tiling now that I know how. Can I tile over the old tile or are you going to make me cringe and say that I should rip out the old stuff first? Under the original is, or course, old grooves of mastic - can one sand this or is this turning into a huge problem? LOL.
WWWAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!! Thank you for your (ahem) wise response. I will now continue honing my powers of procrastination and focus on a simpler project, like building another story onto the house. ;o)
Oh you wise guys! LOL. I hope you're not suggesting I don a helmet and use my head as a battering ram on the tiles. I don't remember seeing Vila doing THAT demo! BUt seriously, guys - why CAN'T a woman just tile over tile? What's the harm? It could be our little secret. Nobody would have to know! LOL..
you can put tile over tile.it's just the wrong thing to do. but if you are going to anyway, make sure you use a good adhesive (thin set) and know in advance how you plan to finish the edge (some kind of bull nose??)good luck
well, you certainly could, Using mastic after sanding the tile down. But the real issue is how your walls wil look. you'll have to install a little drip edge type of decorative shelf, to conceal the huge difference in wall to tiled wall. as far as the floor goes you can always tie over tile but most folks tear it out because they don't want the huge difference in 2 seperate floors.
