I will be sanding and refinishing the treads on my stairs. I need a little advice on the grit of the sandpaper. I plan to use a minwax stain and poly. The stain says to work my way up to a 220 grit sandpaper. Other instructions on the minwax website tell me to work my way up to a maximum of 100 grit for bare wood. What would you guys recomend? Also, am i better off filling any nail holes with stainable wood filler or should I use the prematched wood putty that you put on after stain and poly. Thanks!

I usually go to 120 or 150 for first coat and then do a light 220 bewtween coats.

Use the after stain coloured filer. The stainable isn't.
