We had a roofing company here to give us an estimate and while showing photos on his Ipad, the salesman went to a site he said was Bob Vila's which showed an estimated cost of about $16,000 for a new 3000 sq ft roof w/ higher quality asphalt shingles. I can't find such a site. Bottom line -- the two estimates we have gotten are miles apart. What would be a good price when they will have to tear off 2-3 previous layers? Thank you for any help.

It would be kind of tough to say what a good price would be since you didn't state where you are located. Prices can vary quite a bit in different parts of the country.
At the top of this page there is a tab called "Find a Pro" which may be helpful for finding a recommended local contractor.
I always recommend getting 3 or 4 estimates when doing a large project such as a roof.
I would get a 3rd estimate, see where it comes in at and then make a decision.
Also, here are some reference articles on choosing a contractor.

Good luck
