I have a new Maytag air conditioner-10,000 BTU's that I bought at Home Deport at the end of last summer. Maybe used it once or twice then in a back room. Now I have it in my bedroom window and it is extremely loud. When the compressor comes on it is so loud that it scares me half to death--needless-to-say,I'm getting not rest and end up turning it off. Any ideas on how to fix that. Thanks. CC

Not without first isolating the exact cause of the noise.
Noise due to vibration could just be from a poor installation in which case changing/altering its mounting may be necessary. If the fan part is causing the vibration, maybe one of the fan blades is off balance or there is a problem in the motor. If it just the fan's speed causing too much noise, you may need to operate it on the slower speeds. If the compressor is the cause of unusual vibration, it might be defective and need to be replaced.
If you are unable to find the cause of the noise, you may need to call in a professional A/C technician to look at it for you.

thank you Dan--I do think it is the compressor and found my manual so I guess I will be calling the Maytag man--no rest for him. Thanks, again. CC
Hi,
**so I guess I will be calling the Maytag man--no rest for him**
Maytag a/c's are made by Fedders and Maytag doesn't fo any service on them. Need to find local/closest Fedders servicer for the warranty.
This might help...

** I do think it is the compressor **
Compressors vibrate quite a bit normally, they are essentially a 1-cylinder car engine. That vibration can become much more noticeable depending on how the A/C is installed.
I would suggest you have the unit inspected *in place* rather then removing it and taking it to a local repair shop for service, so the installation can be inspected. I don't know how old your unit is nor what the warranty is on it but you may have to pay for in-home service.
BTW. You can read about limited extended warranties which products often have at the following link:
