We have some solid wood paneled walls that have been previously stained (within the last two years) and want to paint over them. The stain is a "Natural" color and is oil based. Has anyone had success at using a latex based paint to cover this type of surface? How about primer - I'd like to avoid if possible so I can keep the wall texture showing through.
Hi dwbruce, You should have no problem covering this so long as the stain was not the kind that has the polyurethane finish mixed into it.Remember that you can cover oil base paints/stain with latex but once you apply the latex, you can't go back to oil.Good Luck!
If by "texture" you mean the grain then you do not want to paint.
To paint: If there is a gloss shine, even if its a dull shine, then you need to apply a deglosser. Once the shine is gone, then light sand with 220 grit. A pole sand really helps. Then prime - yes you need a primer.
