I'm trying to find the best type of roof for my house. I live in Vancouver B.C. where the weather is mild in the winter with the occasional snow fall & a lot of rain, to in the summer where it is warm and dry. I've been told by an asphalt roofer that metal shingles are expensive. And by a metal roofer ashpalt roofs are crap. If I have to redo my new asphalt roof in ten years, really what is more expensive? Any advice is appreciated.

In my part of the US, standard 24 gauge metal roofing costs about $500US per square labor and materials included. New Construction.

That's about $810Cdn per square at current exchange rates.

That's 10x the cost of asphalt shingles.

And it would cost more if your job included ripping off existing shingles.

For a 20 square 28x50' ranch home that works out to be about $17,000Cdn for a metal roof.

If you can afford it, then do it.

Most can't.

There are many types of metal roofing available for residnetial application. These products cover a pretty wide price range.

Metal roofing has been documented to be the fastest area of growth in residnetial roofing today.

A good source of info is www.metalroofing.com

Tod Miller's Classic product is an excellent product. There are also many other choices available. Metal roofing can be expensive, but doesn't have to be. Some of my contacts charge as little as $4.25 CDN/sq.ft. for aluminum shingles installed, while others charge up to $11.00 for the same product on roughly the same house. Shop around, as there are many good choices out there. You can look up our stuff on www.permanentroofing.com.
