WHY WE LOVE IT: Improbably, this 1890s Folk Victorian home in Millen, GA, manages to be both rustic and refined at once. That’s the view from the curb, at least. The interiors are, if not lavish, then generously proportioned and finely detailed. The original tongue-and-groove pine floors have been completely refinished and a grand staircase greets visitors upon entrance. Enhancing the home’s period appeal are elegant light fixtures, high ceilings (10-14′), and five (count ’em!) fireplaces.

The sheer quantity of rooms dedicated to socializing is enough to provoke envy. From the entryway, beautiful French doors open up to a spacious living room with luxurious details, wainscot trim and a carved-wood mantel on the fireplace. The adjoining dining room would be perfect either for dinner parties with friends or weeknight meals at home with family. The recently renovated kitchen boasts an unusual amount of counter space for an older home, while the pantry is an old-time layout feature conveniently well-suited to the storage demands of today. A sitting room (also with a fireplace) offers yet another irresistible area to relax in with loved ones.

Modern convenience and antique charm continue into the bedrooms. The ground-floor master suite has a fireplace (of course), and in the adjoing full bath there’s a claw-foot tub (retrofitted with a overhead shower fixture) and double vanities. Both bedrooms upstairs measure 15′ x 15’—and both have a fireplace. An office and full bath complete the second level.

Back outside, a lovely, unpretentious porch spans the facade. Embellished with signature Victorian decorative brackets and trim work, it’s the special sort of porch you can’t help but picture enjoying from the comfort of a rocking chair, sweet ice tea in hand—it’s Georgia after all, isn’t it?

Siting on a quarter-acre corner lot, this 120+ year old, three bedroom, 3,200 square foot home is on the market for $148,000. In the opinion of this reporter, it’s worth every penny.
