I would like to convert my attic into 2 bedrooms. I'm curious on how can I tell if I have asbestos in my attic?? (It's the blown in kind of insulation) Where the floor will be does there need to be insulation between that and my current ceiling?? or would this cause a fire hazard??
I've never done this big of a project before.
I'm also curious on how to tell where my support beams are located? Are they any different from the rest of the beams located in my attic??? Because I'm also wanting to eliminate a bedroom and add a dining room and convert the bedroom along with part of my current living room into the new living room. PLEASE HELP!! THANK YA VERY MUCH!!

Whoaaaaaaaa! You lost me! 1st off your asking way to many questions for just one post. Try to keep it simple. I doubt your attic insulation is asbestos, but take a sample and have it tested to make sure. Your support beams are simply 2x8's10's,etc. That are equally spaced on centers. They are called joists. Converting attic space to liveable space is very feasible. You will have to modify your current heating and /or cooling system to heat these new rooms. Your original system was not sized with this new space in mind. A totally seperate unit may be required. Factor in all the materials and labor and you have one major project. You will need flooring, walls, lighting, outlets and HVAC already mentioned. <tip> post this same question in the fix it for'em. You will get many more responses. There's alot of good guy's over there. Good Luck, Tom

I thought some attics were only 2x4's. If this is the case wouldn't this attic have to beefed up prior to any real weight being put up there?

What about the insulation between the attic and current living space? You forgot that one Plumber Tom. I've always thought that was more of soundproofing, but I'll let someone else answer that.

Good luck,
