I know that there are a lot of factors that play into having a swampy backyard after moderate rains, but I've recently been told that it is because there is clay below the topsoil. We've owned the house for about a year in Central NY and except for the dry summer months the yard is swampy. I've heard talk of drainage tiles, but I'm not sure if that would be helpful. We bought our house for it's big yard and are very disappointed to find out that it's squishy 9 months (or less depending on the rain) out of the year. I realize that this is vague information and that the "lay of the land" and other factors might be the cause of the problem, but in general does anyone have any advice? Thanks in advance for your ideas.

Like you said there are several factors, but you may want to look into installing a french drain. Also, you could dig a trial pit to determine what the soil conditions are in your yard. If the topsoil has a high clay content, you could mix in sand etc to improve its drainage. However, if there is a band of clay under good topsoil, the french drain may be a better option.
