We are remodeling our fireplace because we are installing a wood-burning insert. We live in a 1955 built, ultra-modern home for its age. The brick on the fireplace is water stained, and it has paint dripped on it in many places. We also have a brick wall in the same room made with the same brick. We just don't know where to start with this project. We have purchased the insert. The contractor said that about a foot of the brick will have to be taken out above the fireplace in order to install the insert. Having said all that, do we paint the brick, do we use cultured stone to replace where he has to cut out, will it look good to have both the brick and the stone...etc? Any ideas or pics?
