Please, please do not use garden fabric (or "weed barrier"). It kills worms, disrupts the natural soil system, does NOT allow rain through. One property owner might live on a parcel of land for, at most, 60 years, but weed barrier will be there for hundreds (thousands?) of years, disrupting the soil, killing the creatures that would live there. And, speaking as the owner of property that a previous owner laid two layers of weed barrier down on (with inches of soil between) it's nearly impossible to remove, and simply makes planting and gardening hellish. Don't do it. It doesn't prevent weeds, at least not for long, it just makes weeding and gardening nearly impossible for all who come after.

I have and will continue to use both. If the worms don't like it, they can scoot over a few feet, but they have probably moved out of my yard due to the weed&feed and the pest killer that I use on the lawn. By the way, my soil system is doing just fine thank you. Now if you will excuse me, I have to go spray my trees.
