Have a two-fold deck problem. First, one of the 2x6s used to support the deck underneath thats anchored in a double joist hanger has developed rotting on the top edge, where the edge of 18- 6" and 4" deck boards are are nailed. Is there any way to deal with this short of pulling out all the good deck boards, replacing the 2x6 and reinstalling? The deck boards are nailed into joists every 2' and I am concerned that taking them off besides being time-intensive will also damage them and the other joists.

2) one or two of the deck boards show some signs of rot. they are 4" decking boards that the local home store says are not available anymore. Is there a way to repair or strenthen them?

Sorry if this has been asked before - but I am new to this site.

If I understand your questions. For the joist can you get under the deck? If yes then just pry the joistout and put the new one in using a hanger for joists. But that must not be the question because it seems to simple. The 4" deck board should be able to be solved by buying the next size up. Run it through a table saw to make it the 4" size you need and maybe use a router on the rough edge. Good luck.
