Has anyone else experienced the musty smell using a GE frontload washer? Mine started after a couple months. Hep hot line acted like they had never heard of such an issue. I've had a repair man out and he suggested using less soap, leaving the door open, and running bleach occasionally. I've done all three and 3 weeks later my laundry room still smells terrible. Not to mention the clothes it ruins. I found adding some baking soda to a load helps with the clothes themselves a little but not the washer. I've found several posts about other washers especially the Neptune, but not much on GE. My 1 year warranty is expiring next month and I'd like it fixed or replaced. Any suggestions?

I haven't heard any such complaints specifically about GE front load models (many are made by Frigidaire - can't tell without the machine's complete model number) but have heard such about just about every other brand of front-loading washer on the market.

It is often caused by the use of excessive amounts of detergent and/or washing in too cold of water (should be *at least* 70°F). Under such conditions residual detergent can coat internal parts of the washer (which smells bad on its own) and that can also foster mold and mildew growth inside the machine.

On the Frigidaire built models, it is often possible to leave the door AND detergent dispenser drawer ajar slightly between washes to help dissipate any residual moisture in the tubs to help prevent mildew but looking into detergent usage is advised.

If a detergent build up has occurred, the machine might need to be partially disassembled to clean some areas. Use of a commercially available washer cleaner (see the following links) might also help but could possibly take quite some time to totally remove any substantial build-ups already in the machine.

If the cause is a usage issue as I suspect, it wouldn't usually be covered by warranty anyway. Most warranties read something to the effect, "Covers defects in *material* and *workmanship*...".
