I want to install chair rails but but I want them to be high (not your standard chair rails). I've seen them in a model home where the bottom of the chair rail to the floor is 52 inches on a 8 foot ceiling. I want the same effect but my family room ceiling is 9feet tall. Can someone offer a suggestion on the proper height?

Thanks in advance.

As the original purpose of the chair rail was to protect the wall from the chair, I suppose the proper height would still be...the height of the chair. It would seem a little silly to install that protection someplace where it would provide only a certain 'look', and not the original intent.

But then again, that's just me. Things go where they were meant to go.

Once you get away from the practical function of the chair-rail, the over-riding concern wouold be proportion and what looks right.

Another rrom line is provided by a plate rail at abour six feet to seven feet above floor.

Missin style with high trnasom tyoe wwinbdows would have a trim running around at the height of the window silll.

It all comes down to what looks right foir the room.

Excellence is its own reward!
