I want to replace my old carpet on my steps with oak treads. Will I have to remove the old pine which I expect to find under the carpet or can I put the tread directly on the pine? Can the tread be nailed, screwed or what? I'm concerned about expansion/cotraction of the tread after nailing down as well as squeaks.

It depends on whether these are housed stringers or notched.

With housed, you pretty well need to replace the entire stairs.

If the supporting stringers are notched, there is a possibility that you can remove the treads wioth out too much trouble to replace them with Oak.
