I have a smell that permeats my 18 year old house during the right (actually wrong) conditions.

If the AC/Heating fan is off and there is a persistent wind, the smell is like sewage. I suspect a joint has seperated or a trap was omitted when the house was built. But I don't know how to track it down because the smell isn't confined to one room. It seems to be worse in the center of the house.

How can you discover where the problem originates?

Well let's see. Do you have a water closet (toilet) near the furnace? If so check this toilet to make sure it's tight on the flange. The water closet may have lost it's wax seal and sewer gas is escaping. Check each individual plumbing fixture for a trap. Check the standpipe on your washing machine.
