I have a septic system and lift station with an open vent pipe about 3 feet off the ground. As can be expected, I often get a smell from this vent if I'm in my back yard. I've been looking at different filters that can be installed over the vent pipe to control the odor. I was wondering if these filters really work and if so which type works the best? Or, is there a better way to control the odor?

Have you considered raising the height of the vent?

The vent pipe passes through the top of my lift station, so when I have to open the cover I guess I could remove the vent line, but I think a long vent line would look weird sticking up high in the middle of my yard. If I had it my way, I'd get rid of the protruding vent pipe all together.

Have you considered a return bend (180 degree fitting) and using NO HUB couplings this way you can disassemble the couplings when you need access to lift the cover.

The return bend may stop some fumes and still allow circulation (2- 1/4 bends inf you cannot get a return bend)

Simple Solutions Distributing sells the Wolverine Septic Vent Odor Filter. The filter is a t-shape which helps keep the carbon drier. The filter also has the most carbon of any filter on the market.
