I want to expand the existing opening between the kitchen and dining room. Current opening is 32". The wall in question is the main load bearing wall supporting the second storey. House is storey and a half. 2x4 construction. How big an opening can I make before I need a column for support? What would the proper header dimensions be?

You need to contact your code office for their requirements for headers.

Generally speaking you should go no longer than 8 feet with a doubled 2x12 header but the overall loads will determine that along with how many jack studs will be required.

Call your code office and ask.

Do not forget to look at what is going to support the new weight from below.

One assumes that a continuous supporting wall or beam is present, but I have seen otherwise.
