Hollywood- You appear to have a great deal of knowledge in this field and my question is in reference to the new refrigerant R410. What is the normal operating pressures for this system and do you need a special set of gauges for this gas? I was told today that you also need to be certified by Carrier in order to purchase this type of condensing unit from them. Know anything about it? One other thing, is there a great deal of difference in energy bills between 10 and 12 SEER units? Thanks. GlenO

R410A has a working pressure 1.6 times greater than R22. Takes different tools because of the greater pressures as well as the possibility of contanimation of R410A. If R410a is contanimated the oil and refrigerant separate and an acid is formed in the system which causes premature failure of the system. Any of the manufacturers Carrier, Rheem, Lennox who use R410A require addtional dealer training because of the dangers of pressures and contanimation in the system. As to 10 versus 12 Seer usually a minimum 10% savings can be realized by installing 12 but you may have a utility rebate available to you if you install a 12 Seer unit. Check with your utility. What usually happens is you become more aware of conservation and you get a bump because of that. But if we have a prolonged hot spell you may see no savings over a prior year bill because the last couple of summers have been mild AC weather. Instead think how much money you saved by ditching that old unit when you did.

Just found this message. Yes, special guages are needed and training is necessary. Without looking at the guages, I believe that the suction pressures are around 120-140 psi. Head pressures, I would have to look at the literature.
Ref.410A has already been talked about as to phazing it out. It's not at all as cracked up it's supposed to be. I have to say that it is VERY quiet though....
