Greetings. My question: I have purchased a 240 volt shop air compressor. I had a 220 socket installed last year when the house and garage were remodeled. Can I install a plug on the compressor and plug it in, or do I have to remove the wall socket and hard wire the air compressor?

Any suggestions would be of great help.

Thanks! CEA

Yes you should be able to plug it in if it is a standard 240v outlet (2 hot wires and a ground wire)and the proper ampacity. You should not for example plug in a small compressor (like a 1/2 horse) to a 50 amp 240v outlet. The problem is the circuit would never trip if the motor is overloaded. If you don't follow this please call a professional to look at it and make sure it is safe. Mr. Electric

Generally speaking, if your compressor was meant to be plugged in, it would have come with a cord & plug.

If you use a cord & plug as the required disconnecting means, the receptacle & plug will need to be horsepower rated. There are no listed plugs that I could find that are rated for more than 3 horsepower at 240 volts single phase. So if you have a 5 hp compressor, you'll need to hardwire it & have a suitable disconnect switch.

Also, there is a relationship between the size of the circuit breaker feeding this motor and the size of the motor. Best to have a professional verify that you have the correct size wire & circuit breaker for this installation.

I have used the Campbell Hausfeld 20 gallon air compressor from https://bestaircompressorstore.com/best-quiet-air-compressor-reviews-2017-2018/ It is Horizontal and best Portable model single stage air compressor. A particularly notable feature of this decent model is its capability of operating on either 120V or 240V current. It is able to quiet operations with very low noise and produces 135 psi max of pressure.
