I have 108 year old house. It has a slate roof and box gutters. I am having the slate replaced with 30 year dimensionals and gutters are being repaired and relined. Currently there is no ventilation in the attic. My contractor recomended using solar powered, low profile vents. He said one would probably be enough. He also said with the vents I wouldn't need ridge venting. If I go with the vents, he recommended that I buy the one I want and he will install at no charge. Ridge venting would cost me more.

Any input would be appreciated.

the ridge venting will give the the most natural look to the roof, if you insall other traditional roof vents you are going to have them all over the roof and it will look bulky and cumbersome, ridge venting is used almost exclusively becasue of its effectiveness and sleek look, its worth the extra couple bucks, especially on a house that you would like to restore/preserve
