I'm in the process of stripping a roofed porch - first time it's been done since 1995. Posts and rails have been quite a challenge. I've noted some what appears to me to be fungal growth, especially in the posts. The wood beneath however is in good shape. Once stripped, what do you recommend for repainting? I'm assuming a good primer coat and then a high-quality latex paint. How can I prevent the growth from recurring? Thanks.

Kilz (comes in oil base or latex - easier cleanup!) is an excellent primer for wood, and gets rid of mildew, plus sap marks won't leak through. I've used it on doors, ceilings, windowsills, etc, and it has never disappointed me! Use a coat or two of that and then paint with a good outdoor latex paint.
