Is laminate wood floor something decent to put in dining area and hall? I'm a little put off by the word "laminate", does that necessarily mean low quality? We are putting directly over tile, which is in excellent condition. Very large area. Husband does not want to buy expensive flooring. I would appreciate your advice, thank you!

These terms are often miss used.

There are two completely different products.

Engineered wood flooring is a thin slice or real wood that is glued to other layers of typically wood, but sometimes wood products are used.

In general they can be installed by glue down, nail/staple down, or as a floating floor.

A laminate floor consists of a picture of wood covered by a highpressure laminated plastic. Pergo is the most common brand name. It is related to countertop laminate.

It is always installed as a floating floor.
