What are the best tree or shrubs to plant if the intention is for them to act as a "natural " privacy fence?

This was many years ago. We were living in the Seattle area (where things grow like weeds), in a 1960s home that had mature laurels. We don't recall which variety (perhaps bay laurel) but some may appeal to you more than others. For us it was a fantastic privacy hedge. In that climate they'd grow real tall and bushy and need frequent pruning (Or they'd take over the entire yard!). They easily were 20 feet tall; pretty deep too (maybe 10' in front of the fence). You could get lost in there!

Don't know where you live or how much time you have for them to take hold, but those may just be worth a look. Your local nursery might also provide advice. And of course some others may respond here!

Good luck,
