I have a Regency wall oven and the glass for the top oven has broken. I tried to get a replacement from the Regency, but there aren't any left in the country.
Other than the glass being tempered is there any magic to the glass that would provent me from me replacing it with black painted tempered glass?

You mean the door glass? If so which glass, the outer, one of the inners??
Also, is your oven a self-cleaning model?

Our company has been successful replacing outer oven door glasses with just an appropriately size piece of temperated glass.
If the original was black, having a piece of 'smoked' glass (like often seen on stereo stands, etc.) will probably be the closest you will be able to get cut and tempered. Parts of the inner door structure will likely still be visible through it though but if not under direct light might not be too noticeable.
