** Kenmore Washer 20712990 **
The complete model number may be 110.20712990
** can't figure out how to get the top of the washer off [to replace my lid switch] **
If the model number I posted for your machine is correct, it is a Whirlpool built 'direct drive' washer model. On such a washer design the cabinet top does not come off. The whole cabinet is removed (or tilted forward) for service (see the following link).

Unless the book was a service manual, instructions for performing service would NOT usually be in it. You can however purchase a repair manual for Whirlpool's 'direct drive' washer design at the following link. It should cover most basic repairs of the washer model number I guessed at.

If your Model # is correct, the entire cabinet needs to be removed. Sounds daunting but it is easily done. On the front of your timer panel, locate the two Phillips head screws. Remove and set aside. Flip the top of the panel up. On each side you sill see a gold colored clip. Take a straight blade screw driver, insert it in the clip closest to you, push down while gently pushing screwdriver away from you. The clip will pop up and out. Repeat with the other side. There is a quick connect plug with tow black wires and a green ground. uncouple this. Gently pull the rear of the cabinet towards you in a tilting motion. The front of the cabinet has a lip that sits under the frame. With the cabinet tilted forward, slide the entire cabinet off of the frame. From there you can access your lid switch. To determine if your switch is the problem, take a jumper wire and place it between the two outside wires on the quick connect plug as it goes into the cabinet. Plug the washer back in and engage the spin cycle. If your motor and tub begins a spin cycle (providing the water is out) then your problem IS the lid switch. If not, then make sure your jumper is in correctly. Try again. If this does not start the spin cycle, then I would look elsewhere for your problem. This model had a lot of issues with wires breaking off of the motor harness, as well as pump couplers breaking.
