Can anyone tell me how to find out what finish is presently on the knotty pine paneling in a home we're about to buy. It's a beautiful room but I don't know where to begin on the walls. Is it minwax? shellac? tung oil? It needs something to cover up the scuff marks, etc. it's gotten over the years. Thanks!

Without seeing it im guesing it is either a varnish, poly,or lacqueor.
I would lightly sand it with 220 grit sandpaper (rubbing it once down and once back then move on to a different spot) you aren't trying to take off material just smooth down the high spots and scuf it for the new stuf you want to apply so it has a good etch to hold to.
Then either spray on a lacqureor,or brush on a quick dry varnish.
I like quick drying clears because it eliminates the ability for runs to form.
I would use a satin finish and you should only need 1 coat because it prolly already has a few on them.
