The godmother of our 7-year old son must have read Bob Vila's "Last Minute Gift Ideas". She made a donation to Heifer International for us AND she gave our son his first real tool box-- assembled by our local hardware store, Wankel's Hardware.

Here are 12 items the folks at Wankel's recommend in the first toolbox for a new do-it-yourselfer (and model train buff):

Tool Box

Hammer

Retractable Measuring Tape

Set of 6 Miniature Screwdrivers

Square

Phillips Heads Screwdriver

Flat Head Screwdriver

Small Crowbar

Carpenter's Pencil

Plyers

Wrench

Pair of Clamps

Toolbox

My dad gave us an awesome divided box with all of those little things that you always seem to need and don't want to buy a full box of (like diff. size screws)...and a promise to dive into his huge shop of tools and give us one of whatever he has two of and that we can use.

Wankel's is great and I like supporting local retailers!
