Just wondering if I should Till my back yard or if I can get away with out.

I just layed 2+ inches of topsoil and going to mix in some fert. and was wondering if tilling is needed.

the under lying dirt is almost like beach sand..

Hoping to lay sod very soon.

If the topsoil you placed is very heavy and clayey, then mixing some sand into it is a good idea to loosen it up and make it easier for the roots of the grass to penetrate. If it's not heavy and clayey, then you probably don't have to till it.

A couple of things to be aware of, though. If, in the process of installing the topsoil, it has become compacted and hard, you will want to lossen it prior to seeding or sodding. That can be done with a rake.

And, 2 inches of topsoil isn't going to buy you much for moisture retention and growing medium for the roots, especially if the subsoil is like beach sand, Water will drain through the thin layer of topsoil fairly quick, but then be lost to the sand. A thicker layer of topsoil, 4 to 6", would be better if you can do it.
