when making suggestions about remodeling our newly purch. 1917 home - I keep hearing - we might not be able to do that - it may be a load-bearing wall. how can i tell without climbing up in the attic (there are spiders up there - you know women and spiders!)

You really should have someone check in the attic for you if you dont want to. You can also look in the basement or crawlspace to see if the wall is supported on a foundation (suggesting it is carrying a load). A few minutes of checking is much better than having part of the roof collapse. There are other things which may hint at the wall's purpose, but you have to know for sure before working on it (and presumably removing part of it).
