I have a 45 year old house. The exterior is wood that has been regularly painted. A painter who we have asked to bid on painting the outside has suggested staining the wood instead, claiming that the appearance will be better and last longer. I am skeptical that this can be done at a reasonable price, since I am assuming that the old wood would have to be sanded clean. I would appreciate advice from anyone with experience as to what the best way to proceed on this would be.
