Quick question. With a forced air system with a main level and an unfinished basement, should the basement air vents be left open or shut during the winter. My famther-in-law says shut since you don't want to heat space that you aren't currently living in. It seems to make sense, but heat also rises and I could see an argument for leaving them open so the basement heat rises warming the floors and lower "space" on the main level.

Any thoughts or suggestions.

Reducing air flow can cause problems with equipment and can increase operating costs. Heat exchangers are designed with a certain heat rise. Reducing air flow across a heat pump coil will cause problems as well.
