Need dirt dug out under house-1928 Bungalow

My wife and I own a 1928 Bungalow in Phoenix, Arizona. We have wood floors that are supported by posts that sink into concrete underneath the house. The problem is that for 35 years the previous owners allowed water to run under the house building up the dirt. We corrected this by changing the structure of the land to allow water (when it rains) to flow away from the house. Because of this buildup of dirt underneath the house I cannot get a termite crew to get under the house. I need to have this dirt removed with out damaging the post that hold up the house. In most areas underneath the house there is less than a foot of space.
These homes are rare in Phoenix Arizona due to the urban sprawl of the last 30 years and receive a historic value and title. We love our home very much. I have no idea where to start and who to hire or how.

There's really no simple way for this to be resolved. It's likely going to be hand work to get the material out from under the house. Machine work can be involved to remove the material from you lot, but under the house it will probably be hand work with shovels and buckets. I'd start by looking in your yellow pages under "Excavating" or "Excavating Contractors". Someone who advertises themselves as doing septic/general excavating might be the place to start.

I would make a 2'wx2'lx4"d sides (approx.) box with 4 wheels or just a plywood bottom. Attact a long enough rope on opposite sides of the box/cart.As you fill the cart up with dirt under the house a second person pulls the cart out and empties it. Then you pull the cart back under and refill.Back and forth over a period of time and this will speed the process. If there are obstructions in the way you may have to make some type of simple form or track (2x4's)that will guide the box in and out. This extra time will be well worth it and your back, knees, and head will thank you.

Good Luck,
