I'd like to know if I can use , for example, Sear's Easy Living white paint as a base coat & Valspars' American Tradition yellow color as top coat?
Thank you.

You should not have a problem doing this ( as long as they are both latex) but bear in mind that if you have a problem each company is going to say it is the others fault.

The question I have is - why?

I think you intend on using the ***** paint as a primer. If you need a primer, then use a primer.

Hi! BobF is right. If you are painting on a new surface, you need a primer. There are two kinds of primers: sealers, which are meant to be used on new, unpainted surfaces, such as wood, plaster or drywall. And, there are undercoaters or bonding primers, which are meant to go over dark colors in the first case, or over glossy, smooth surfaces such as laminate or ceramic tile in the second case. If the ***** paint that you mentioned is a primer, there should not be any problem. Good quality paints are generally compatible between each other, except for certain brands, such as Pratt & Lambert. Hope this helps you, and good luck with your project!

I already applied the Zinnsers CS as a primer. I actually wanted to use all American Tradition Paint but it so happens that I do not live close by a ***** (we've decided to use the colorwash instead of sponging). Since Consumer Reports Magazine rated Sear's Easy Living paint as good & ***** is close by, I have decided to buy their white paint to apply as the base coat & the American Tradition yellow paints as top color (color washing technique).
