My mom has a metal roof and has experienced the inconvenience and danger of falling ice and snow piling up in front of her doors and garage. She is looking into snow guards or snow rails but is concerned about the heavy snow load that could be created with the snow rails. We live in the Northwest where there is heavy snowfall. Has anyone had experience with either of these products? Would you recommend either of them? Did you have issues with large amounts of snow piling up behind the rails and potentially causing roof damage?

It sounds like you are having ice dam problems. Most ice dam problems are caused by warm air leaking into the attic and heating up the roof deck, melting the snow which refreezes as is gets to the end of the roof. Air sealing the attic floor completely and insulating the attic to an R-60 will reduce or eliminate the ice dams.
