We are working on repairing rotted oak sill beams on an 1840s timber frame house.

We removed the bulk of the rotten wood. How does one get the back (roughly 5" in from the siding/face of the sill) flat enough so we can glue in new wood? We managed to get to about 1/8" accuracy with hand tools but the lumber is very ragged-y from the chiseling so concerned about glue adhesion.

Thanks Sajufe
