Am having a bathroom redone. Got quotes from 2 contractors. One says for the faucets and shower controls I can go to big box and buy Delta or other offp-the-shelf brands. The other points me to plumbing supply showroom, where they sell many other brands, usually much more expensive.
Looking for advice. If I find a Delta or Moen that I like on the shelf at HD or Loz, will it be as reliable and long-lasting as others?

Nothing wrong with box store lines of name brand faucets. I just bought 3 delta and 5 moen-faucets for my new house.

Considerably less money than plumbing showroom.

You'll have problems with the 10 and $20 faucets the box stores sell.

The big difference is that the "contractor" installing the fixtures will warranty both the fixture and the labor....If you buy your fixtures at a discount center and supply them to the contractor you are responsible for returning the fixtures if they prove defective, meanwhile paying the contractor to remove the defective and re-install the replacement. For the few extra bucks have the plumbing contractor handle it. erik

rpxlpx, I had a bad experience at Home Depot when I purchased a set of Delta faucets. The faucet box was banded to prevent tampering (a plastic around the lenght and width of the box) When I got home there was 5 parts missing. Took it back and they told me to call Delta which I did and they shipped me the parts i needed. When I had Delta on the phone I asked them who did the banding of the boxes. They claimed they don't and Home Depot claims they didn't. WELL SOMEBODY DID IT! and lucky the faucets were for my house and not a customers'. My point is even if you see the banding open the box and check to make sure all the parts are inside, It will save you 1 big headache. Yes the big box stores are competitive in price to plumbing supply houses. As far as the lifetime warranty goes, just have your plumber fill it out and you mail it in. Plumber's labor warranties vary from 90 days to a year. Ask your plumber about his labor warranty and make sure he writes it on the invoice. Your doing the right thing in your selection of a name brand faucet like Delta or Moen. Good Luck, plumber Tom
