We have a A/C technician come to our house to put in more freon. He told us that the evaperator coils for both units (3.5 and 4 tonnes, Lennox) need a replacement (I don't know how he determine this since I was not at home). He would like to replace the existing coils with Trane coils. The cost is $1200 each.

We have another A/C technician come out and he would like to replace the existing coil with Aspen coil. The cost is $850 each.

Can you please tell us if it's better deal to go with the cheaper solution? How much TRANE vs ASPEN coil that justifies the cost?

Also, how do these people know that the evaperator needs a replacement? I wasn't at home when the first technician was here but the second technician doesn't measuring anything to indicates that the evaperator is the issue.

Thank you very much for your help

We are the second owner of this house. The first owner lived here only 2 years. The house was built in 1999. This is fairly new house and the brand of the systems they used is lennox. I don't believe there are any changes to the system from the previous owner.

Anyway, the first tech told me that the freon in the system is completely gone. He automatically knows that the coil is the issue. Also, what border me more is that the second tech insists on using aspen coil. It seem like they have a special deal with these manufacturers.

Now my questions are:

1. Can the coils be clean without replace?

2. If the coil is not issue then where all of the freon goes? Leak somewhere?

3. It's good idea just call another tech to just maintenance the system and get a third opinion?

If your system is out of refrigerant you have a leak of some sort. The tech can charge with nitrogen to find the leak. I find the evaporator coil has rust on the side tubing. The should be able to show you the area of the leak. If hidden from view you might be able to here the leak. Cleaning the coil won't stop the leak. A clean coil will allow for good air flow and proper temps through the system. Aspen are a very good coil. I will normally buy what the shop sells. Aspen are normally stock by most HVAC Shops

How do Aspen coils rank among coil manufacturers?
