We are in the process of buying a weekend fixer upper and the owner did not drain the pipes for the winter. Now, the floors are buckled, doors won't close and there is mold. We want to gut the entire house from top to bottom (it's only 900/1000with basement sq ft) Our concerns are that the mold may have spread onto the existing beams, if so do they need to be replaced or can it be cleaned? I did read some articles that is it best to have an environmental contractor. The house is located in Ulster County, New York State. Any advise would be appreciated. We haven't signed the contact yet ... waiting also for the owner's insurance adjuster to assess the damages.
