I have pulled the carpet out and found laminate floor over the top of 50 year old hardwood. i took the laminate out but it has all the black glue or sealer on it. how do i get that off and not wreak the hardwood so i can restore the hardwood?
are you sure this is laminate ?
could it possibly be vinyl floor tile and the black sealer or glue you see might be resilient cutback adhesive ?
what were the dimensions of the "laminate" ? (thickness, length, and width)
the reason i ask is that if it is a pre 1980 resilient vinyl product, it very vell could contain friable asbestos and pose a serious health risk if handled, cut, scraped, ground, sanded, or otherwise mechanically disturbed, and the Enviromental Protection Agency has veryu stringent removal guidelines for public health reasons.
as to what you can do to get it up, if it isnt an asbestos containing product, you could scrape as much of it as possible and use solvents, then use drum sanders, but it really depends exactly what it is and your post isnt giving much to go on.

it is black sealer. 1/4 in thick flooring and about the same on the sealent. we are scraping it down as far to the wood as we can but i dont want to put any chemincals on it.
Sounds like old battleship linoleum or sheet vinyl ... all of which contain asbestos, inclusing the adhesives.
IF it a resilient sheet vinyl or linoleum sheet it most likely contains asbestos. I would stop what you are doing immediately and have the black adhesive/sealer and the flooring tested. You could be in danger of asbestosis or mesothelioma. I would also consult a doctor to minimize the effects. As stated the Enviromental Protection Agency and all state and local governments have laws in place for handleing and removal. You arent allowed to just scrape it up. IF it is asbestos containing materials, you are placing youself and whoever else is in that house at risk.
